Okay, at 36 weeks the baby would be a month premature....which isn't good. But it DOES happen. You are supposed to go in labor at 40 weeks. Sometimes maybe a week more. Sometimes a week less. You can't control when you deliver. Your body goes into labor when it is ready, unless you are induced by a doctor.

According to all of my books, 37 weeks-42 weeks is considered full term. Although after around 40 weeks, you will start to be monitered closely to make sure complications don't arise (ie: placenta is dying, baby is getting to big, and baby's first stool-I know, gross, but true). Although the beginning of your third trimester bookmarks a "viable pregnancy" in which a fetus could possible survive outside the womb. I have always read that you don't really have a due date, you have more of a due month. Because of the complexity of the female body, menstrual cycles, and ovulation dates, a baby's due date can vary widely. But here are the stats for you:

Also, less than 10% of births occur on the due date, 50% of births are within a week of the due date, and almost 90% within two weeks.

I hope this helps!

Whenever that baby wants to come, or in some cases when there is something wrong. Any time after 36 weeks a women would be able to give birth, without serious risk of preterm baby. But no woman is the same, no labor is the same.........

38 weeks is considered full term
but a woman is pregnant for 40 weeks on average
at 42 weeks, most doctors will induce labor (or sooner depending on its size).

But technically pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. But don't forget they start counting on the day of your last period, which is actually 2 weeks before most women are actually pregnant (so its really 38 weeks.) Confused yet? LOL

When the baby is ready to come out.

Pregnancy is 40 weeks, give or take a little.
37 weeks is considered "full term" though.
Up to 42 weeks is also considered normal for some moms, but the caregiver would want to monitor the mother and baby closely.

Typically 38-40. It can certainly happen at 36 or 37. .. I think the dr's don't try to stop the labor once you are 37 weeks, and before that they will give you medicine to stop it.

Basically, because it's safe. The baby will survive even though it comes between 36-42 weeks.
