I am currently working in a small business where there are only two employees, me and the boss. I am trying to keep the place from being a chaotic mess but I am constantly falling further behind. I can not get my boss to organize himself atleast enough to help things work more smoothly. HELP!

Regretfully there is no way to help people like this. My first office boss was horrible, things were always in disarray and he would even take stuff from my desk and then lose it.

I learned very quickly to NEVER give him a file or folder without making a copy first. I made him ask me to touch my files (and I even left a note on top of my desk stating "TAKE IT AND DIE"

We had a pretty good relationship, so I could get away with this, but damn was his office a disaster area. I offered many, many times to stay on my own time and help him, but he always refused.

Seriously though, I sat down and had a "come to Jesus" talk with him and explained to him that 1-he paid me by the hour and 2-he was paying me about $100 a week just for me to hunt around for the things I needed. When I put it like that, he at least became aware of what his disorganization was costing him in real dollars.
After that he did make an effort to leave my stuff alone.

Chaos is a personality trait, the only way to "fix" it would be to find another job.

Find ways to drastically reduce the amount of work that needs to be done around the place. For inspiration, read an old Harvard Business Review article by Michael Hammer, "Reengineering: Don't Automate, Obliterate".

Hi, Im in the same situation as you I am employed by a small company and my boss is so un-organized its just me and him so what I usually do is have a daily schedule for him set out Mon-Friday and then he knows what he has to do that day and then I have a box for him to set all his paperwork in and then every Fridays is cleaning where I file all the paper where it goes and throw away the rest.

Enrol your boss to some time management course. Usually those with bad time management skills also makes a mess of their workplace and schedules.

This is a good place to take an online time management course.

Tell him that getting organized will positively effect his/her bottom line. In other words, he/she will make more money if they get organized and then provide a couple of examples. He/ She will need definitive proof. Trust me it works for me all the time.

I hope this helps!
