how can I tell if the power steering rack on my 2001 dodge dakota needs replacing?

If it's leaking power steering fluid.
If you have to fight to turn the steering wheel.
If the rack got damaged somehow (off-roading etc)
Among others...

Check to see if it is leaking. If it starts to blow out all your power steering fluid you know you need to replace it..
