He discovered genes, which he at the time called "heritable units" through a series of experiments performed on pea plants while he was working as a gardener in a monastery (he was a monk.) I think the impacts of that are pretty obvious.

Gregor Mendel (a monk) cultivated garden peas on the side of the monestary.
He didn't know about chromosomes or genes. He did predict their presence., and called them" unit characters". He knew nothing about meiosis. Dispite lacking this knowledge, he proclaimed three principles which laid the framework for the science of genetics. He was truly a genius; a man "ahead of his time". Mendel's principals:
1) Dominance
2) Segregation
3)Independent Assortment
(look these up in your bio book)
He was not the first to suspect these principles, but where others failed, he was succesful, because:
1) He was meticulous with his crosses
2) He performed hundreds of crosses
3)He carefully observed and recorded his results
4)His results were quantitative (He used mathematics)
The discovery of chromosomes and genes after his death confirmed his principles. He died never knowing the true scientific impact of his discoveries.
