I would say Motorola's phones. They are a very friendly-user. I would choose a flip-phone because you don't have to lock/unlock the keypad to keep it from accidentally dialing to a number. Don’t choose Razr because they are wide and thin, it’s slippery. Try some old version of Motorola such as Motorola V557 or Motorola V360. The prices are also very reasonable especially if you are signing a new contract.

Easy my friend get the Firefly if you have Cingular or the comparable kids phone from Verizon.
Both phones don't have keypads so they can only call people on the phone's call list which you can program there is a 911 button too. One press and it calls 911.
I worked for Cingular when they first got the Firefly and a lot of customers were ordering it for seniors. It has no gadgets and no web access or texting and the buttons that it does have are HUUUUUUUGE perfect for folks with arthritis.
If you can't find one from Cingular then get one off eBay or a third party cell phone retailer in a store or online like letstalk.com

Nokia 1100. One blue button does pretty much everything!! Black and white screen with buttons that are easy to use and a menu system that is one of the most intuitive. The 1600 is just as good, with a colour screen which they may find easier to use.

I think you should get an inexpensive prepaid one because I dont think an 81 year old would need 500 minutes. I say either tracfone or boost mobile or something....

Depending on your dexerity I would go for a clamshell- they generally have bigger buttons and the screen is protected from scratches. However if the flip mechanism is too fiddly then it ruins the whole experience. On the plus side you can usually just answer by opening it instead of trying to find a fiddly little button on the normal phones.

You should look at the jitterbug. It is a new phone designed for easy use instead of useless gadgets. It has big buttons and is easy to use. You can see it here:
