Info on contraceptive sponges?

Question

I'm about to start taking the Pill for the first time this month, and although Planned Parenthood said it becomes effective within 2 weeks, I would like to use another birth control method. My boyfriend doesnt really want to use a condom (which is ok since we're both virgins), so the next best thing sounds like the contraceptive sponge. Does anyone know how much i would expect to pay, and how it works?

I used it many years ago and it was ok. My friend swore by them.
