Love is patient and kind. Love is not jelous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, is not selfish and does not get upset with others. Love does not count up wrongs that have been done. Love is not happy with evil but is happy with the truth. Love patiently accepts all things. It always trusts, always hopes, and always remains strong. Love never ends. There are gifts of prophecy, but they will be ended. There are gifts of speaking other languages, but those gifts will stop. There is a gift of knowledge, but it will come to an end. 1 Corinthians 12:4-8

Does anyone out there believe this?

I BELIEVE EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID BECAUSE MY BF TOLD ME THAT ONCE AND LIVED UP TO IT. AND WEE HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR 9 YRS. BUT AS FAR AS THIS PART I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT...There are gifts of prophecy, but they will be ended. There are gifts of speaking other languages, but those gifts will stop. There is a gift of knowledge, but it will come to an end. 1 Corinthians 12:4-8

Yes, I certainly do. Just to correct the above statement, I think you meant to write 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

This scripture applies to many things, but marriage is one example. In a marriage, it is important to be kind and love your wife/husband as yourself. Forgiveness is key to a lasting marriage. So, when it says that love is long-suffering and kind, it means forgiving one another. Love is patient. Married couples must be patient with each other because there will be things that will cause of the mates to burst forth. There is no need for you to brag about anything. Marriages endure when there is much love. Love is not just a one sentence definition. It entails many things. We must show love in a variety of ways.

Just think if everyone in the world displayed this kind of love. Wouldn't this world be a better place? Instead, people want to kill each other, do bad things, go to war and kill innocent people. As that scripture says, "love is not happy with evil." Certainly not, because evil is associated with hate, not love.

I will leave room for others to comment, but I just wanted to get things off to a nice start.

Let's just say that it's an ideal which very few could live up to 100% of the time.

I would call it a rule of thumb. It would be helpful to look at this when you're in doubt whether you really love someone or whether they really love you. If you can't match at least a few of the descriptions, it's time to move on.

In a perfect world, yes, I believe the verses are true. Following them is an entirely different story.

I believe it completely however I also believe we can not show "true" love, that kind of of love ourselves. Only God truly can love like this and we can only even strive to love this way with his help. The truth is clear however the implementation isn't always easy.
