Look at how they pay their bills. I wouldn't suggest using any type of website service to find a roommate. Try asking your friends if they know somebody looking for a roommate. Ask around and if you can't find anyone THEN submit a classified in your local paper. SCREEN THEM ALL and ask for their last two bills (to make sure they aren't over due) and ask for a deposit (in case they try to screw you over)

The Classified section of the newspaper is a good option but specifically state the requirements, and make it known that they will be interviewed prior to acceptance. This should rule out some of the misfits and rejects. The actual interview should rule out the rest leaving you with a room-mate that you actually feel comfortable living with. Also, choose a newspaper with the credibility you want in your roommate, an obvious no-no would be a tabloid.

Good luck...

If your local community college has a housing board, check there.
Do a background check and credit check if you can.
Ask for two months rent up front, go month to month after that.
Inquire as to their habits (smoking, pets visitors).
Decide about chores, etc.
