I have 5 keys for my 05 Xterra, one is a valet key, and one of the programmed keys does not work. (ie. the car won't turn over when I try this key) The Nissan dealer says I can only have 5 keys total, and they need all the keys in order to program a new key. Is this true, and if so, how does it all work?

Master key can open doors, trunk (inside or outside of car) start your car open the glove compartment etc! The valet key is mainly used for Valet to park your car, it can start your car up & lock it thats it! It cannot open glove compartments maynot open the trunk. Never give your master key even to the mechanics.

I have Toyota Yaris 2002 CDX-D4D UK version with one black key which when insert into ignition does nothing and the security light keeps blinking with the same frequency as without any keys inserted. Though, when I turn the key to position 3 when all dashboard lights come on and check happen then the security light goes off instantly. From what I have read the security should either: 1) Master key - security light goes off instantly when master key is inserted and not turned 2) Valet key - security light goes off after roughly 2 seconds 3) Unprogrammed key - security light keep flashing None of the above applies to my situation but I can still start my car and operate all locks etc. as if it was a master key. Would be grateful if someone with Yaris 1999-2005 could test and confirm if you get the same behaviour with your master key inserted into ignition without and with turning. Many thanks, David

Most new cars have a "smart key" system (an electronic ignition signal which tells the car that the proper key is present.) This is to help deter theft. I have heard that some cars have a limit on the number of keys available, and that they'll need all of the keys to program.

valet keys are intended to give to parking attendants, don't unlock trunk, glove box. on the dealer issue i suspect all keys are need since they need the same program, the 5 key total may have something to do with the key program

The Valet key will only start and lock the car, it cannot open the truck or glove box.
