I think you're wrong on what the substance was. Steve Palermo (umpire supervisor) said that the umpires ruled the substance and dirt.
If it was pine tar, he's not the only one that uses it. I was listening to someone else (forgot his name) and he said that some batter use pine tar to get a better grip on the bat. Besides, the dirt or whatever it was was on his palm, not his fingers. You don't pitch with your palm.
Another thing, Kenny Rogers pithed just as good without it!
