The main use of the computer would be fairly basic, eg surfing the net, playing music, uploading photos from digital camera and simple word processing.

Watch the Apple vs. Mac ads for some insight, very funny...

Based on your list of stuff you want to do, I'd suggest a MAC.

A lot of people above won't have even looked at a mac, let alone used one. I was a PC user for many years before converting to the Mac, and I'll never look back. I find using a PC is ordinary, there is no pleasure in it, just frustration 90% of the time. When Apple says the Mac just works, it really does, my Apple constantly responds to what I tell it to do (if I close a window, it will close!).

Surfing the Internet is a pleasure on an Apple and as an added bonus you won't get any viruses.

Playing music is really simple using iTunes, simply import what you want, add album artwork etc.

Uploading photos from your digital camera is extremely simply using iPhoto. Literally just plug in your camera and iPhoto will recognise the device and at a click of a button you'll have all your photos imported into your library. You can easily edit your photos, create professional looking books and calendars (trust me, they're amazing)

You can still do simple word processing on a Mac, you can get Microsoft Office for Mac which includes Word, Excel etc.

Once you start using a Mac you will seriously never look back, an Apple won't only allow you to do the above tasks well, it will also be able to please you with the other dozens of programs it has. It is seriously art, it's enjoyable to use. I had my previous mac for 3 years and had no problems with it what so ever, I've recently got a new 20inch iMac.

I would seriously consider purchasing an Apple, it's so much more than just a computer, you will get a lot more from it than just the above tasks.

And if you're really worried about switching to Mac OS X from Windows, Apple's next operating system has a program called 'Bootcamp' which allows you to run both Mac OS X and Windows (not that you'd want to!)

Get in contact with me if you have any questions anyway.

I have a PC desktop computer, a Dell laptop and an Apple Powerbook and Apple Macbook. I haven't used the Macbook much yet because it's new but it does have the capabilities of running both platforms. In my family we're all on computers all the time and I have claimed the Apple Powerbook. Given all of our use I won't buy any more PC stuff. Someone said that PCs hold 90% of the market. That is true for desktops but not laptops. My Apple Powerbook is brilliant for internet use, photos, word processing and movie making and music. The beauty of it is as 2 other people have said, "IT JUST WORKS" and it does. I plug in Sony and Canon cameras, firewire drives, Pen drives (various) and video cameras with no problems at all. Up pops the programme to use them. Whenever I do the same thing on the Dell or the desktop PC I get messages about having new hardware and I have to install stuff. The PC platform is a little messy. If you've only ever used PC you'll find the Apple platform smooth and easy to use. It will take a little adjusting but is sleek and the laptops also look better as they are designed by artists and musicians with computer knowledge. Apple do design well you must admit.
The only problem thing that I do have is game playing. Most games that you download from the net are .exe files which are not compatible with Mac. My Macbook should fix this shortfall.
Good luck and enjoy.

It depends. I already had a desktop PC and I bought a macbook. My biggest problem was trying to network the two. I was told it was simple but after three weeks I finally gave up. Everytime I called AppleCare they would blow me off because my other computer was a PC. If you do get a mac don't bother with AppleCare. It's a total waste of money IMO. The other major issue I had with my macbook was the lack of hard drive space. The Ilife programs such as the DVD editing software take up way too much space. For example, I edited a home movie that was only an hour long and it took up almost 35GB! That same movie on my PC only took up 255MB. Maybe I did something wrong. I don't know. Regardless I decided to stick with my PC. On a positive note Apple is much safer than a PC and somewhat easier to use.

I would say Mac all the way. I have a PC at home, but i use a Mac Powerbook as my main day to day system.

The Mac OS is stable and very user friendly, and if you want to upload your digital pics, then the Mac comes with an application called iPhoto which stores, sorts and allows you to make minimal changes to the pics. If you have an iPod or are planning to get one, then it integrates seemlessly with iTunes as well.

For what you need, a Mac will do all that you need in a very stylish and capable way.

Being a user of both PC and Mac in the same home, the Mac is my preferred solution. I don't have to worry about virus's as Macs dont get em, it is way more stable than Windows XP and for what you are planning to use it for, then i think a mac will be great for you.

If you want a computer that lasts more than a year, Take a Mac. They last a lot longer and are more fun. You can get office for mac, so it will work with the 90% of the rest of the Earth. But if you want a laptop that lasts 6 months for $500, pick a PC!

And plus you can get a mac and run windows, so you can work with the rest of the world and be a kick *** computer!!!!

I won a free PC laptop last year and it has been the most expensive computer I've ever owned. No Mac I've ever seen has been as much trouble as the PC. The only reason to get a PC is if you like troubleshooting computers.

Macs cost less than comparably equipped Dells, and Macs can run Windows too, so there's no reason not to get a Mac.

Mac without a doubt, have one for the last four years and
mainly for photos and iPhoto 6.05 (witch comes with Tiger)
is unbeatable. I have upgraded to Tiger and most of my
time on computer is taken up with fixing, downloading photos.
iTunes is also the best and mail application is uncomplicated.
Go for a Mac, the prices have gone down. Now they have the
Phantom version which is better still, and and all I can say is
that if it is better than the one I have, it‘s unbeatable. Another
point, Apple will always give you auto updates and if any
security fixes are needed, you will have it within one week,
at no cost. Cheers, Iain

Yay! yet another mac vs computing device question. look computing device's grant lots greater thoughts and are low value than mac. it quite is a actuality. Now it is my opinion:I even have 2 mac/4 computing device machines and that i'm getting so ill of Apple attempting to bleed me out of each cent I very own while i want utility, music, video clips, centers, something! Then I hop onto computing device by way of fact it would not ask for a mastercard or to insert 1 / 4 to coach it on. MAC O.S X is a little greater sturdy than abode windows, yet I hate that stupid paperclip! Now, my large beef with mac is areas. finding a particular area for a mac is a discomfort, plus when I do locate it, I could take out a sparkling very own loan to pay for it. desktops are made by a ton of diverse companies, so it quite is not complicated to locate areas. flow with computing device, particular i comprehend, vista sucks, yet request downgrade rights and you gets XP for loose as nicely to the authorized replica of vista in case you ever exchange your recommendations.

Get a PC...

Macs are rather limited in terms of runnable software, interactability with the outside world (as 90% of the outside world is using Macs), and if something goes wrong with your mac...you're going to need to replace it cause they can't be fixed.

Macs usually are built by compiling everything into a small little package, and although this is nice...it also means that repair is rather limited.

As for what make of PC...do not get a HP. They are similar to Macs, in that all repair parts must come from HP. They simply don't work with other parts.

Gateway and Acer are good balances of performance and price. Acer however, can become a drag as their model list is about a mile long. With gateay, you can begin a chat with a sales person who will discuss your needs and reccomend the best computer for you.

Dell and Toshiba are also good options.

Hey! i myself have an APPLE laptop and my man, i tell you there is nothing better than a mac, when i had a windows, i left it on for 2 days, and it got a virus! on my mac, ive been seriously having it on for 2 months and nothing has happened, it operates normally, its fast as always reliable, and endless. The ibook is discontinued, but they now replaced it with the intel based Macbook, omfg its awesome! you can run windows on it, use windows programms, it also comes with a BUILT-IN camera!!!!!! frontrow, and many more cool features! a pc u have to do lots of work setting it up, in a mac, all u do is take out the laptop turn it on and your done!!! im telling you , get a mac, you wont regret it!
