Answergirl - You provide excellent answers on this site. Please do continue. Oh, I too now live in a rural area. And I too miss the level of urban/more informed conversation. Nothing against the rural folk, I love em. But they don't have a grasp on national issues or world issues. They tend to focus on local issues only.

Miracleha - A few short years ago was not the 'stone age'. And what say you about the 'new ability' to spread misinformation?
Nevermind the fact that most youths cannot personally communicat as well as before, because of the internet. And spelling used to be MUCH better. And what about the effort involved in looking things up for oneself ? I can still remember, how much new info I learned as a result of looking up one thing and then also finding more than I was looking for.

I don't think the internet has had a positive impact on politics. To assess the VALUE, all effects must be considered. Prior to the internet, rarely could any news source get away with pure lies. Nor did many even try.

What, the ability to speak more freely? If it hurt us, there is something wrong with US, not the internet.

With out a doubt the Internet has helped. What it can't do is convince a blogger or reader to get both sides of the story before drawing a conclusion. When you see a story that claims one side or the other has made a mistake the natural reaction is to believe. This is true especially if the writing is good.

But beware, one fact that is based on the slightest untruth will be construed as fact! And there you go.... the rest of the story becomes non-fiction. Another generation of conspiracy theorists are born and the American way of life goes on.

Even though the media (Internet) broadens the knowledge level it can't make the believer a voter or activists. So, it's really no better than a good book but, you don't have leave the house or office to get it.

There is good and bad, as in most things. The bad stems from the ability of anyone to say anything in a website and make it look like it is truth. The good is that there are many more ways to find information and to discuss with those not in your immediate vicinity the issues facing the entire nation. Living in a rural area, I miss speaking and exchanging information and ideas with urbanites.

Free speech, more exposure to different views and opinions.
This is essential to a Western democracy and the internet has helped that.

Helpful to the neocons since our wonderful newspapers are liberal.
But hard on us liberals because more people can point out our lies quicker.
