My son says its probably a very large garden spider.
PS This only applies in the UK, you don't say where you are. If you make contact at the spider site below they may be able to help you.

You did not say where you lived, but if you are in North America, rest assured we have NO dangerous spiders which fit that description! NO "Recluse" spiders, desert or otherwise, have orange on them anywhere, nor do they have striped legs! Most likely, if your spider is on an aerial web suspended between two objects, it's an Argiope of some sort, probably a Golden Ariope(Argiope aurantia), and it's harmless to humans. You can look up pictures of various spiders on the link below and compare them to your spider, and if you have a digital camera, you can sign up and post pictures for experts to identify, as many entymology and arachnology professors volunteer their time on this site.

Steven Y got it right, it is a species of mouse spider. Some of them can have a really painful bite, but do not require medical attention. They also, as you can tell by the photos, have large and powerful fangs. They have been known to pierce boots.

Search the web site for the "Desert Recluse" spider. They come in different colors. Extremely poisonous.
