I applied for an office job, and they said I was well-qualified but the reason they didn't hire me is because I don't speak Spanish. HELLO!.....THIS IS THE U.S! Since when did it become a requirement to speak both English and Spanish to get a freakin' office job? I'm NOT racist, but I have to say that I think it's wrong to discriminate against me because I don't speak the language of ANOTHER COUNTRY.....I think that everyone who wants to live here in the U.S. should HAVE to learn English or go back where they came from.........

Was it a government job? If not, the beauty of living in America is that you have the freedom to choose who you work for, and that means you can work for yourself! Businesses also have the freedom to choose who works for them. That means if they want Mr. Bilingylingy, they can keep interviewing until they find him. Now, you have the freedom to raise awareness that this company is pandering to illegal aliens, and maybe they'll lose some business. Cool game, huh?

You know, I'm sorry you didn't get the job, but your response sounded a little immature to me. If life was "fair", we'd ALL have it much easier.

As far as the bilingual issue, maybe you can go back and read the job description again. Most employers will list the minimum requirements for a job, so they should have listed the fact that you need to be bilingual in the job description.

If a good percentage of people who use the services of the company you applied to don't speak English, it makes good business sense that the company wanted someone who is bilingual for the position. As far as people who migrate to the US having to "learn English or go back where they came from", that is easier said than done.

I don't speak Spanish, and there have been several jobs I was otherwise qualified for, but couldn't apply for because I'm not bilingual. That's just the way it goes. As far as discrimination - welcome to life. People are discriminated against all the time, for many different reasons. It sounds like this is the first time you've ever experienced it though. Doesn't feel very good, does it?

Whatever the case, I think as you continue your job search, you need to grow up a little.

Sorry!! But the job belongs to the employer... not you!! Even if it is the good old USA, there are a lot of Spanish peaking people here. Any employer has the right require almost anything of a prospective employee. If you don't fill the bill, you're out of luck!

I live in The Bahamas where the OFFICIAL language (which I understand the USA doesn't have) is ENGLISH, but you are not going to get a job that deals with France and Switzerland if you do not speak FRENCH!!!!! If that company has a lot of Spanish business, then it is absolutely fair!!!!!!!!

Did the position require that you speak Spanish?

When you first applied to that position, did you already know you had to speak Spanish?

If they didn't mention it, then it was not fair.

Employers want an honest profile of the person they employ, so why shouldn't employers outline specifically what they want in an employee?

i think you might be missing the point.

if you apply to a job that clearly states that bilingualism is important to the job, then you shouldn't be surprised that they didn't hire you.

not everyone speaks English, especially the elderly immigrants.

try a little sympathy on for size. who knows, it just might fit you because your slightly racist, ignorant question certainly doesn't.

Did the job description or classified ad state "bilingual a plus"?

The more diverse you are, the more marketable you are....get over it.....learn a new language. You will become a much less ignorant person when you choose to embrace knowledge...

I agree completely. But in the age we live in with all of the people in high places, we have no choice. With more hispanics coming to the US. We need to "accomidate" them. I know it sucks.

For good or for worse, Hispanics are the largest minority in the USA and now you must speak their language.
