The name was chosen by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a combination of the word "Kong", since the movie King Kong had caused it 'to colloquially mean monkey' in Japan. According to Snopes, Donkey was chosen because Miyamoto intended it "to convey a sense of stubbornness." Because he was a complete nutter. Nutters, for some reason that escapes me, are often referred to as donkeys. Personally, I think donkeys are lovely gentle creatures and deserve a more pleasing monica than the idiot of the equine variant, but there you go, that's just my opinion.
I,on the other hand, merely talk a load of marbles. So whether you understand the answer or not, Donkey Kong rules. OK????

It was a mistranslation. I'm not sure if it happened when translating from King King into Japanese or from the Japanese back into Donkey Kong.

it was eithey a mistranslation (monkey kong, to not get sued for using king kong) or delibarate...the creator said somewhere that he was using monkey to point out that the kong was stubborn. (kong obviously comes as a refrence to the famous large monkey king.) whether the first was true and the creator made up a story (much like a parsec in hansolo's account (maw, obi-wans grimace, lucas etc.)

The legend goes that it was a mistranslation. It was supposed to be Monkey Kong. But this is disputed. Check Wikipedia.
