Not any more than the people of the United States would starve if we ended buffalo-as-meat production.

The japanese have the bounty of the sea at their disposal and will readily eat many things squeamish Americans won't, such as squid and eel and blowfish. Whale is not a necessity, but there's a fractional market for it, nonetheless.

--Never tasted it. --Don't intend to.

I wouldn't think so. I mean a moratorium has been in effect until recently and I didn't hear any problems from Japan or Norway. I think a bit part of the whaling is that it's a very old tradition for each country and people love tradition (even when it questionable). I do not know if whale meat tastes good or the nutritional value, but I know one argument against whaling is that the oceans are so polluted these days that the safety of the whale meat is a concern.

I don't know how much whaling still goes on anymore anyways, but no they wouldn't starve, it's a food people like just like any other and I would assume it tastes good if they eat it and it should be as nutritious as any other meat, though I've heard whale meat is actually where all the mercury in fish thing originated, not really in fish

Nope. You wouldn't starve if the USA stopped making ostrich burgers.
In Norway and Japan, the demand is from the government, and it's a historical nationalistic thing, and has nothing to do with nutrition these days.
Whale meat is said to taste good (I have not tried it) and is nutritious in the way that beef is.

Some cultures such as the inuits have consumed it for centuries. Their survival depended on these animals. They only took what they needed, so the whales & people co-existed for eons quite well. Does Japan & Iceland depend on this food source. Doubt that very much since the meat sells for mega-dollars only the wealth could afford to eat it. That doesn;t strike me as a need. Greed yep.

No, whale meat does not constitute a significant part of either country's diet. Basically, those countries claim that they have fishing industries that utilize whale meat and they are not willing to give those industries up.

No Whales provide only niche and specialty products. Whale meat is only dietarily important to some Inuit people and even then not very many

whaling is illaegal pretyt much everywhere now, even in traditionally big whaling countries. the main reason for whaling was to obtain their oil which is no longer needed cuz we have other sources.
