Saw something today that had me thinking and was wondering what others would answer to this question. Thanks for your time.

It is implied that a promise has NO expiration to it... uh- except if you're a politician- then once you're elected all promises expire automatically.

In the idealic sence of a promise must first be clarrified. A promise is a verbal or written contract between one or more people to do something.
Then we have to define what type of promise was made.
For example: "I will take out the garbage today." That promise expires at the end of "today". If it is fulfilled then the promise is kept and therefore never expires since you can never take back in the trash from that point in time. If it is no fulfilled then the promise still doesn't expire it just isn't fulfilled. The only "experation" is the time limit of "today". Yet, two days from now you still had promised to take out the garbage two days ago. The only difference is the failure to carry out that action.
So just because a promise is fulfilled or not doesn't negate the promise itself.

It's kind of a yes and no answer. The only definite expiration date on a promise is the one someone puts on it. Like I will marry you in 2 years or in 5 years we will try to have a baby. If someone says I will pay you back the money I owe you with no time frame then there isn't one.

No. Once you make a promise, it is a promise to be kept. A promise does not degrade with time. So you are to keep it so as to maintain a trustworthy reputation. Unless of course it is a promise made as a youth when the concept of a promise has not been fully realized. For the adult the phrase, "A promise made is a promise kept" should be noted.

If made by a human they expire immediately. A promise is a comfort to a fool. A commitment however, is an entirely different thing.

The bigger the promise, the longer the expiration term.

I believe promises don't have expiration dates. You should not make a promise you don't intend to keep.

it depends on the promise... If I say "i promise to love you for the rest of my life" to the man I marrying, the promise is for life at the time I say it..but if he turns around and does something illegal and/or immoral, something that is unjustifiable than I have to say the promise would expire for me...

I agree with stormy knight-there is no expiration date unless you're a politician, in which case they develop selective amnesia after election.
