How do you know for sure that he "found" it? I know that as his mother, you're on his side 100% but come on, how many people honestly find $20 lying on the ground outside? I live in Manhattan, a place where millions of people commute to and I have NEVER found $20 on the floor, not even $5.

Just by the way you've phrased this scenario I'm finding it hard to believe, too.

First, you say he came home with it, then you say he found it in your front yard. Did you actually SEE him pick it up? And it seems oddly coincidental that he immediately wants to spend it and while he's gone, these parents pop over claiming they're missing exactly that amount. Hopefully you can see the complicity of the whole thing.

If I were you, I'd be asking a whole lot more questions of my son....not a bunch of strangers.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound rude...just an experienced parent and grandparent with an open mind. Children try all sorts of things. It's up to the parents to see through some of the deception.

Don't be surprised if he did steal it....finding $20 in any given front yard sounds like a lie to me.....he probably put it in the front yard so you could see him find it...kids are not stupid...if hes over the age of 5 this is something a kid could have totally come up with.

I would personally interrogate him..kids break down under pressure....use revers psychology....works all the time

Sweetie, as much as you love your son and want to give him the benifit of the doubt, that story sounds fishy to me. He found $20 in your front lawn? Maybe you should look into the friend's claim before you decide your little angel couldn't nick some cash. I grew up with this girl who's parents thought she could do no wrong. If I hadn't had a witness, no one would have believed me when I accused her attacking me and pushing me into her mom's rose bushes. YOu will do your child no favors if you shelter him and believe that he mysteriously found $20 when his friend's parents are now missing $20.

Maybe they believe that your son finding the money right after he came home from his friends' house the very same day they lost money is way too much of a coincidence don't you think so? They could also think that you are covering for him. There isn't really a way to get them to believe that your son didn't do it, but as long as you know he didn't, its all right.

You don't. You assure them that you are not sure the situation BUT if your son did steal you are sorry, embarresed and will deal with the situation accordingly...However, if he did find it (in their yard???) let him know when he finds money on a friends property, give it to the friend or the owner. IF it had been the sidewalk...different story.

BTW, if you dropped 20 or 50 bucks on your driveway, wouldn't you want you son's friend to hand it over if he finds it?

Did you actually see him find the money or is that what he told you? It seems a little convenient that he found it in the yard allegedly and his friend's parents are all of a sudden missing money. I know you want to believe your son, but unless you actually saw him find the money, it sounds to me like he took it. Even if he is young and you asked him about it, kids are very good liers and he could be hiding something from you. Sorry to be so negative.

Do the math...20 dollar bill in the kids pocket he claims, found on the ground...likely story.

Be sure to defend the thief, after all he learned 'dishonesty' from you!

Well...if one kids dropped is accidentally, and the other kid found it, the mature thing to do would be to give it back, no matter where he found it.

Pretty stupid for an ADULT to play "finders keepers, losers weepers" to a child. What if the situation was the other way around?
