I was off-roading with some friends and had some body damage in two places. i can get to the inside, and just want to "press" out the body panel to more or less like they were. then touch up, clean up, clear coat etc...i know it wont' look like before, but oh well.

my question is...what tool should i use? a rubber mallet on the inside? i don't think a regular metal hammer is a good idea, seems like it might damage the panels even more.

The best thing to use is dent pullers if the dent is big enough. Generally people don't have these in their own garages.

You can use anything as a "tapping" tool, as long as it has no sharp edges. Try putting some hard nylon or rubber piece between the panel and your rubber mallet, and tapping just hard enough to bend the majority of the bend back out again. Then use a goodly amount of putty to fill (making sure you've primed the surface properly of course).

Or like the other guy suggested, take it to a body shop and let them do the work.

The best tool you can use is a telephone to call an expert repair person. Leave it alone and live with it or have it fixed by a professional and enjoy the results. Body work is not simple and the damage you can do is beyond belief.

If it's not such a big dent, I would leave it as it or or take it to a body shop. If you attempt to repair it with mallets and hammers, it will end up looking just like crap. These are usually bumped out and then filled with putty or lead.
