They most likely are a bryozoan called Pectinatella.

The "great swamp" in NJ? lol. There are lots of swamps in NJ and lots of creatures too ... but none are made of gelatin.

There are plenty of critters that could be described as gelatinous. If you've ever seen a hydra that was contracted, you'd call it gelatinous. Freshwater jellyfish and freshwater sponges exist, but I don't know if they live in New Jersey swamps.

hahahaha. Maybe that gelatinous creature is related to the "Jersey Devil" that stalks the Pine Barrens west of Barnegat.
