No there is no security in Yahoo Instant Messenger or MSN Messenger. You really need to take great care as to what information you share with your friends over these services.

If you use either service to receive and send a file, be sure that you save the file, so that you can scan with your antivirus program and your antispyware program, before you open the file. Transfers of files via either messenger is easy to get infected even if you know who is sending you the file.

Nothing is secure on the Internet these days!!!! Install the best security system you can, get hooked up to an ISP that has a good security policy/program and "pray" or limit your Internet surfing to only reliable and well known sites!

No instant messenger is very secure, there is always a way that someone can hack it, use your account, watch your conversations etc. Just be careful what you say.

it depends on what you define as 'secure'.

Did you use a strong password?
Do you realise your communications will travel across the internet unencrypted? And do you truly understand the implications?

In general, I would say it is secure enough because masses of people use it. But I wouldn't discuss state secrets over it.
