This shouldn't be hard. Just explain to her why women have periods, give her the info on tampons and pads and such, explain that any discomfort such as cramps are normal, and tell her what she can expect (like how long it lasts). I think its a wonderful compliment that she would want to talk to you about it rather than her mom...it shows that she trusts you. This doesn't have to lead to the sex talk, but just tell her everything you would have wanted to hear when you were her age.

you must know about periods. However you may not know about kids. One thing to remember when kids ask questions, or adults come to that. Start by giving very brief but honest answers, not too in depth. If they ask for more Information then give them slightly more and so on. When they have enough info they will stop asking. People quite often feel more comfortable talking to someone other than than their parents. I have an 8yr old daughter, who talks to the lady opposite, if its important this lady will let me know about the conversation. Otherwise its kept confidential. I am so grateful that my daughter has someone to turn to who is responsible and who I know will always give her sound advice. So don't worry

I am assuming your a woman??? if so share your First period story & how it made you feel, then advise her about tampons or pads etc..and explain that all women have them as a sign of their womanhood, and what happens to the body when you are having a period & that she may get stressed/angry or moody & get cramps. tell her all the usual remedies..ie hot water bottle...!! may be buy her a book about women and their bodies. may be you should have a quiet word to her mum and let her know that her daughter started her periods but dont make a buig deal out of it as the poor girl may be embarrassed, reassure her that this is normal!!!! Good luck X

If she lives with her mum....her mum needs to know. I would tell her mum. There is a lot of information this child needs to know and I do not understand why her mother shouldnt be involved with it.

okay. assuming u are older and been through the same. sit her down and talk to her about it. just explain what periods is and try and help her. just keep in mind she may be confused and upset. just deal with periods. dont go into any other issues. try and also talk her into talking to her own mum. she needs someone to be there for her now and its important someone is. i went thru my first period alone, upset and confused. just talk to her and explain what is happening to her. x

Offer her practical help like buying sanitary protection. You have got to remember that girls that age are very very shy about things like that. Talk to her mum on her behalf. Offer your guidance and support and she will be fine.

There are some excellent books out there. I bought one for my daughter when I realised I didn't know all the answers.
Have a look at Amazon.
