if a parachute exerts a force of 5000 newtons on an object that falls 500 meters is it positive or negative?

well the gravity is down and the parachute puls up.
It is for you to decide what is positive and what is negative. Yu are completely free as long as you are consequent.

It is a negative to the force of gravity.
