My grandmother used to say it all the time. I asked her once what she meant. She said it was a polite way to say you had gas.

In Victorian England it was an expression to describe an anxiety attack and only applicable to women. In those days women were prone to fainting attacks and it was thought that this was caused by the emission of vapours in the brain that caused dizziness hence 'an attack of the vapours'.
