I vote for the Civic. I have one and its been great. Check the Consumer Report issue for cars and it will compare reliability records of the two models over the last 10 years (or however long they've been out). I can save you the trouble, though...nobody beats a Honda. If you can get an Accord, even better. But I have a hatchback Civic and it has been very handy.

Honda Civic. They look great and get excellent gas mileage. I still mourn the loss of my 96 Honda Civic (Civics and deer don't mix). Get a stick shift for the best gas mileage and best pick-up.

I vote for the civic. I have a 2002 model and I love it!! Haven't had a moment's trouble out of it and from what I've heard I probably won't. They have a very good reputation. I don't think you will be sorry if you pick that one.
