The movie was made for tv in 1988. The name of the movie is "David" and based on the real life story of David Rothenburg who's father set him on fire. Matthew Lawrence played David. Bernadette Peters and John Glover played his parents.
NOTE: "The Burning Bed" was a 1984 tv movie with Farrah Fawcett. After being abused, she sets his bed on fire with him in it. "Dave" is a comedy with Kevin Kline acting as the president. It was made in 1993 and was a theater movie.
