January time you probably want to go somewhere fairly high or there's a chance that you might not get any skiing at all... Val d'Isere has a fair bit of night life, big skiable area and access to a glacier in case the snow hasn't decided to fall before you get there. Alpe d'Huez is also worth a look (make sure you're staying near the centre of town if it's night life your after though, some bits are a bit far flung) and Les Deux Alpes would also fit the bill.

One of the cheapest ski holiday sites around is www.igluski.com. My advice would be to try out Val d'Isere and Val Thorens if you want the whole package of awesome skiing/boarding and busy apres-ski.
Neither are cheap but so if thats the biggest priority head to Andorra or Bukgaria. End of the day you can always get flights, transfers and accomodation in a good resort for under £400 at start of Jan.

Sugarloaf USA, (Carabassett Valley, ME) the best skiing in the east. The only ski resort with expert rated trails east of the Mississippi. Lift tickets are available for day, week or season and in vacation packages.

They have snowboard trails, nightclubs, restaurants, and rooms & suites. If you get there early (or late) enough in the season you can also play a round of golf.

Best country all round is Austria. Fabulous skiing, babes, good prices, and a very civilised country.

I was in Livigno last year - same problem, lack of night life but otherwise perfect. We're trying Andorra in January.
