The butterfly effect is the idea that a butterfly flapping it's wings in one part of the world creates a ripple effect which could create a hurricane in another. Basically it's point is that one small action can have huge consequences. It's ascribed to chaos theory.

The Butterfly Effect is a notion from Chaos Theory. It speaks to the unpredictability of dynamic systems such as the weather. The illustration goes like this: A butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazon. By the time all of the effects of this single flap have played out, there has been a typhoon in Japan. The idea is that the weather, and other complex areas, are unpredictable because of the nature of the interactions of multiple non-linear systems.

Check this out:
"What is the Butterfly Effect? If you define it within the margins of science, it's a chaos theory that explains evident disorder in a highly structured way. In relation to the upcoming New Line Cinema film of the same name, writer/director Eric Bress explains The Butterfly Effect... "comes from a Ray Bradbury story originally. Scientists have used the expression to mean that the wind flutter from a butterfly may ultimately have a domino effect that over time creates a typhoon in China, six months away, 3000 miles away."
Your question got me thinking, too.. so I looked it up and this is what I came up with. The rest of it can be found here: http://www.ugo.com/channels/filmtv/features/thebutterflyeffect/settour.asp
hope this helps!

the butterfly effect is one of those questions like if a tree falls and nobody is around does it make a sound........it stems from the thought that the tiny breeze from the flap of a butterfly wing can have an effect on the surroundings, hence the smallest thing that he would change in the movie created a much different outcome

the butterfly effect is a common phrase used to reffer to the "chaos theory". this theory states that the smallest thing can cause large effects. for example, a butterfly that flutters its wings in the amazon can cause a hurricane in the far east. so when ashton kutcher goes back in time to change one small thing the change causes a ripple-effect and changes his present dramatically.

It's the theory that says that small variations in the initial conditions of a dynamic system (e.g., the weather) may cause significant variations in later results.
A popular example is that a butterfly flapping his wings in Cuba could result in a tornado in Kansas.

I loved this movie (at least the directors cut version). I shall tell you the easiest way I relate the whole idea to my friends...........
Remember all those cartoons we saw growing up? There were episodes that had the characters go back in time and step on a plant or whatnot and when they got back to their time everything was changed? Same idea. "Chaos" caused by one thing can effect EVERYTHING past or present or future. Happened in SpongeBob Squarepants, the Flintstones, Smurfs, The Jetsons...........Hope that helped.
