In colder zones after the first frost dahlia tubers are normally cut back to leave a 6" stem and left in the ground for another 8 to 10 days but dug up before the first freeze. Doing this encourges more "eyes" to develop and to aid the plant to reach maturity. I still believe that you can safely dig them now and store in dry peat moss in paper bags. Keep in a cool place until next spring when after your last frost date you can replant. Happy gardening!!

I have heard that you should not prune any plants within 6 weeks of the first frost. I suggest that you cover them with mulch and leaves and prune them in the spring. This is assuming that the type that you have is a perennial. If it is an annual, it is dead and you will just have to get it again in the spring.

Dig them out, brush the soil off them and store the tubers in a cold and dry place. Do not freeze them. They will not survive out side. Plant them when the temperatures are back to above freezing.

cu them down to the ground and cover them with a large rock or some mulch, this is easier than digging them up, just be sure to remove covering in spring

You could try to dig them up, but you might as well just buy new next year.

"Deadhead" the bulbs back to the top of the soil, nothing more, and they'll grow back next spring.
