The world's second highest mountain is certainly K2, but Mount Godwin-Austen is another name by which it has been known, and there are surely several other local names for it. I don't think you can say that one of them is the "real" name and somehow the others aren't real. They're all real.

Sorry it is K2. The Chinese authorities officially refer to K2 as Qogir; Chinese: 乔戈里峰, Pinyin: Qiáogēlǐ Fēng; other names include Mount Godwin-Austen[2], Lambha Pahar ("Tall Mountain" in Urdu), Qaumi Pahar ("National Mountain" in Pakistani Kashmir) Dapsang, Kechu, and Chogori[3], which means "The King of the Mountains." The 2nd highest mountain which doesn't have Everest as its parent mountain is Manaslu in Nepal, Manaslu is still part of the Himalayan chain.

The real name for k2 is Mount Godwin Austen named after a british general.The k stands for Karakorum and basically describes the group of peaks in that certain range.The first attempt was in 1902 however it was not conquered until 1954 by an italian team of climbers.

k2 is one reference for the mountain but it is also called Mount Austin Godwin or it is known locally as Chogo Ri - which means 'Great Mountain'. it is in the Korakoram Range on the Pakistan/China Border and is 8611m or 28251ft high

k2 was discovered by colonel t.g.montgomery while doing a survey of the area in 1856...the k stands for Karakorum...and the 2 is the number of the peak which stands at 8611 metres...hope this helps
