It would be nice if they required this on the driver's test. There are a lot of people out there that can't operate a stick shift - if an emergency occurred that required their use of a stick shift car, they would be in trouble. I believe that it would add a certain amount of coordination required to be able to get a license.

You don't have to learn how to drive with a stick, but you should learn at some point. You never know when you will have an emergency, or need to borrow a car, and it happens to be a stick. If you learn how to drive a stick, you can drive any type of vehicle that might come into your future. Always be prepared for anything.

I think people would be better drivers if they learned to drive a manual transmission. I really believe that you don't drive an automatic, you just steer it. I think driving a stick shift teaches you important things about the mechanically properties of the car. It also keeps you focused on driving and limits amount of attention you can give to distractions.

People would be even better drivers if they also had to learn to ride a motorcycle ;)

you don't Need to learn on a stick right away but it never hurts to know how. in case of an accident and a vehicle needs to be moved . most farm equipment and large trucks to include some cars have stick shift and depending on where you live you could encounter this a lot.

I don't think it should be required. If you were forced to learn it, and then were never exposed to it later, it seems that you'd forget how to do it. Or is it like riding a bike?

All I know is that I tried to learn a few years ago and ended up bending the shifter forks that shift the transmission in a 68 chevelle. Wasn't a big deal to fix, but not worth the hassle to me!

YES! It teaches you not to get too close to people when stopping on a hill!!!! That and it teaches you to pay more attention to your car and what you are doing. You don't have as many hands to get distracted.
