To calculate a percentage, take the original price and divide it into the amount off. For example, if a $100 item is now selling for $80, 20/100 = .2 = 20% off.

The % key on calculators is meant for calculating when you know the percent. Using the example above, if you wanted to ask for 20% off the $100 item, key in 100 + 20% and "20" would show, telling you 20 is 20% of 100. So you would know to ask for $20 off.

Sometime percentages are easier if you think about money first. Example: What percentage is a dime of a dollar? (Put everything in the same units.)
10 cents/100 cents = 0.10 on your calculator.
Multiply by 100 to get to %.
0.10 x 100 = 10%

Example: If I need to buy gum for 74% of my class, and the class has 57 people, how many do I need to buy gum for?
57 x 74%/100% = 42.18
or
57 x 0.74 = 42.18

A percentage is the number given divided by 100.

I am not sure what your calculator is doing with the % button. If it came with a manual, I would check there. Chances are that is is not doing what you think it is.

Just divide the smaller number by the larger number. That will give you a decimal number. Just lose the decimal point and put a % sign behind it
