a friend from school farted into a jar and put the lid on it, 5 years ago. the purpose of this was to see if it would still smell in 5 years time. (he was bad for letting off stinkers). but someone stole the jar at a party at his house last weekend so we don't know if it worked. didn't really care before but am now curious. any ideas?

getting a jar that airtight alone would be very difficult....

and there are tiny holes all over seemingly solid items, so the gas would have leaked out.

sorry, but it probably didn't work

There's a problem with your "study." How do you know the fart smelled in the first place? If it didn't smell, then it wouldn't smell in the jar five years later either.

By the way, it's really not possible to contain a gas in a glass jar for that long. Since the jar has been opened before, air will find its way in, and the fart will escape. Also, there could be some interaction with the molecules in the jar itself, decreasing the odor.

if you placed it in a jar...and not in a completely air tight jar...eventually the gas will leak out...i mean its been 5 years...and eventually it will effuse out through the lid. if the gas was really still in there...i would really want to know if it still really stinks...haha, this is the coolest experiment i heard. man you guys are really patient to smell the fart. i think i will try it now....ill tell u in 5 years what happened.

If the jar was truly air tight. Doubtful. Then yes, the molecules that make up the odor would not deterioate after 5 years.

probably will not work because the particles would have mixed with oxygen and diffused into the air when the jar was open

Gas does completely deplete after time. So, no Stink Bug was fired.
