About 1% of children have blood pressure that is too high. The cause is often unknown. When a child's high blood pressure is severe, it is often because of another serious condition, such as kidney disease or heart disease.

Children can inherit high blood pressure from their parents. Overweight children are also at higher risk. Therefore, children who have both a family history and are overweight should be assessed carefully.

Obesity can cause hypertension even in teens. If it's stressful situational high blood pressure, i.e., going to the doctor's office, that would be caused by anxiety. In the case of anxiety the blood pressure should return to normal once out of the anxious situation. There are also some viral illnesses that can cause short term high blood pressure.

If it is high blood pressure that goes up and down, you should monitor the blood pressure about 4 times a day. Once on arising, then around noon, then mid day and again before going to bed. Note the blood pressure, what activity that was just completed. If after a meal, note what was eaten. Then after about 2 weeks, you can go back over the blood pressure diary and hopefully get a correlation between the high blood pressure and what occurred at the time it was taken. It is possible that some foods can cause short term high blood pressure.

If the high blood pressure is uncontrollable, then of course contact your physician. It could be an idication of a serious disease.

HBP is caused by many things, heredity is one and your diet can be another, Sleep Apnea, Arteriosclerosis, kidney related, there is no sure way to definitively determine the exact cause, but treatment is easy enough...Don't let it go untreated for years like I did...My HBP started around 43, thats when it first was discovered and that was 7 years ago..

Possibly too much salt in his diet. It's in pretty much all processed food, it gets added while cooking and then sprinkled on top of a meal at the table.

If he has fast food or take-aways regularly, there will most likely be a lot of salt intake with those also.

Is the boy overweight for his height ? Does HBP run in the family ? Does he have an undiagnosed heart condition ?

If no, then find out why the kid is so stressed out. Are the parents divorced, bitc_ing at one another, putting him in a position to pick sides ? Is he being picked on at school.

Make sure he gets proper rest, eats a balanced diet (less sodium including vegetables and fruit, and exercises to release daily stress.

PS. If you like my answer, could you please rate it. I am at 232 and need 18 points to get to level 2. Thanks !

General physical conditions (overweight, etc). Sometimes kidney problems influence blood pressure as well. Have him checked asap.

There are a ton of pressures on young kids. I'm an adolescent counselor, I should know. You look like the Dad. I'd ask him. I'd also ask myself about the pressures I put on my son.
