Lavatory was powerful. When somebody says, "Hey man, I am gonna go use the lavatory," it makes a person think, "Damn, he is gonna go use the laboratory. And he's gonna mix chemicals around with his urine or feces and make a new drug that can cure cancer or something." Yeah, lavatory really needs to make a comeback.

I use it all the time...the lavatory that is. It's a great place to find the cure for cancer. Or at least ponder about it. Who are you? You made me laugh!

People use to call it the lavatory all the time when I was little. Now every one says bathroom. I say bathroom because other people around me say bathroom. I do not know why it is hardly called the lavatory anymore. Maybe it might be because I used to think people meant the laboratory.

I think people don't use it because it's an out-of-date word.

...And I never thought the person was going to go mix chemicals. Laboratory and lavatory never brought up connotations of the other with me, simply because they've always been two different words.

Times have changed, people change, so the language changes it's like saying Groovey. At the time lavatory was the proper word to say bathroom but then in was replaced with a slang: the bathroom.

There was a time when they were also called "W.C's" (wash closets). Some places In europe, they still "wash" their privates while in the bathroom. Depending where you are from, it serves different purposes. For example, back in the 40s/50s in the US, when more and more women were in the workforce, they would have a couch and chairs in the bathroom to accomodate women who were suffering from menstral cramps. It was a place they could go to rest for a few minutes when they felt faint or had really bad cramps. Hence, the name "restroom"

Because the term lavatory makes people think of the joke of a crapper they have on airplanes.

Here's a thought.....how the hell did it get started being called a RESTROOM? What, somebody was tired and took a nap while taking a dump, and so that's where they started going when they needed to rest?
