Red-ear slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)

Basic care guidelines at http://www.redearslider.com

Size- 9-10" generally
Longevity- 10-40 years in captivity with good care

Diet- this is a meat-eating species while young. Feed it a foundation of high-quality turtle pellets, supplemented with live or fozen/thawed 'fish foods', like small fish, worms, etc. with bloodworms being a special favorite of smaller turtles.

When it gets bigger, you can add some vegetables, mostly dark leafy greens.

The reddish orange spot behind each ear gives it away. Its a red-earred Slider turtle. They live in aquatic habitates. I wouldn't recommend feeding hamburger to anything, due to the bacteria problem it can cause. I feed my paint turtle goldfish (small feeder ones) and turtle pellets that i buy at the pet shop. He also likes some leafy veggies (not iceberg lettuce) and carrots on occasion.

look around on the internet for care sheets....this site has some good info http://www.turtlecare.net/

The turtle you described is a red-ear slider, which is an aquatic turtle. I personally would buy floating turtle pellets or sticks from a pet store or even Wal-Mart. They also like leafy greens (NOT iceburg lettuce!), carrots, and other fresh fruits & veggies. It will also eat small fish (I would reccommend rosie reds or feeder guppies for the size you described). You can also give it the occassional earthworm, or some pet stores even sell blackworms for turtles too. Good luck!

It sounds like a Red Ear Slider to me. If it is, they are an aquatic species. They can eat veggies...leafy greens, raw hamburger, feeder fish, crickets, and you can buy turtle pellets. If you go the pellet rout, i prefer the ones that float, and make sure you get aquatic turtle pellets. any pet store will have them. They can get up to 11in diameter. But they will grow to the surroundings. They can live a long time.

But I am assuming it is a slider, I could be wrong.

It's a Red Eared Slider. How do you know a bit about his care if you don't even know what he is. Next time do the research before you buy not after.
