The second one is correct, as it means "the houses of the customers". The first would mean that several customers were all in one house.

i think.....
but don't worry about it, i do this for a living and still get it wrong a lot.....think about it too much and it stops making sense!
everyone gets this apostrophe rule wrong!
it should be customers because there is more than one of them. but it should be customer's because the newspapers and houses belong to them. however if you are referring to more than one thing belonging to more than one person then it should be customers'.
they'll eventually remove this rule then we can all relax.....

The correct one is the second one I had to look it up. There are multiple customers and they have multiple homes.
