98 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L
It idles at about1500 when i am stopped. And feels as though it is running a little high. I replaced the IAC valve which helped a little but it still idles high????

the idle can manually be adjusted, it probably needs a turn of the adjuster screw.

This engine is fuel injected. There is no idle adjustment screw or any other manual adjustment. The isle speed is controlled by the computer.

The computer opens and closes the IAC, which you replaced.

It could be the wiring to the IAC.

More than likely a vacuum leak.

The engine management computer compensates for the lean condition from a vacuum leak so the engine doesn't run that bad. But it if the leak is bad enough, even if the computer completely closes the IAC, the idle speed may still be too high.

Inspect your vacuum lines for cracks or missing lines.

Spray some water from a squirt bottle on your vacuum lines. Squirt around the base of the throttle body. Squirt around the around the intake manifold gaskets. Listen for changes in engine RPM.

Could be a vacuum leak, sludged throttle body, or throttle position sensor, it would have to be properly diagnosed. DO NOT adjust the base idle screw. (Brian, The computer does not take info from the oxygen sensors until the vehicle is warmed up.)
And I don't think it's even worth commenting on the guy that thinks this vehicle has a choke. Don't go to auto zone and "have a code pulled" 90% of the time the code is not for what the actual problem is. For example and O2 code could be caused by a vacuum leak or fuel mixture problem. Have it diagnosed and not by a sales idiot at a parts store.

Idle speed too high. find the adjustment screw (usually around the throttle body) and turn it counterclockwise 1/8" of the way. Also, a tune up wouldn't hurt yah. just tell them to check the idle speed. Doing it yourself without the proper equipment can lead to other problems if done wrong.

Oxygen sensors make your vehicle run a high idle until your vehicle warms up. Just something to check into also.

could be a few things. your idle screw can be adjusted or your choke could be stuck on so take a look at those two things
