It's basically just what it says it is, a method of simulation in which you break a process down into discrete events. Each event has properties such as the time to complete. You can get information such as the maximum number of products that can be built and how those numbers will change if you edit small parts of the build process. For example a discrete event could be considered screwing a nut onto a 1" screw. This may take 20 seconds or something. Suppose you wanted to just change that screw to a 1/2" screw and know what your change in overall output is. You could do that with a discrete event simulation.
