It all depends on where you will be using the phone. Each carrier has good spots and bad. If you are looking into T-Mobile. Check out their website, it has a Personal Coverage Check, where you type in an address and it will show you how many bars you should have there. Type in as many addresses as you want, it is free. Mainly you should have good coverage in locations you visit the most. Home, school, work, friends house, etc

If you are just wanting to talk and text, Straight Talk is great. They use verizon towers and get great reception, I've had one for nearly a year now, they phone's never broken (and I drop it a lot). However all the phones have the same basic menu style and no extras, so I recommend buying the cheapest phone, cause its NO DIFFERENT than the $100 "blackberry looking" one. But as far as service, its great, no dropped calls or anything like that. Verizon is ridiculous, don't go there, they're service is great, but you'll pay way way too much for it. My bill started off just under $100, and 7 months later was at $250, and I was no where near running out of minutes or texts or web use. So I cancelled for a whopping $500. Stupid. Again, Straight Talk uses verizon with basic phones and great service for either $45 (unlimited) or $30 (1000 mins, 1000 texts and 30MB web) a month. Good choice for the basics. (web isn't real great, I don't even fool with it).

I would have to say Cingular.
I have tried Alltel, Verizon and T-Moblie and none of them compared to Cingular. I haven't had any problem with their reception or their services. Some of the other companies seem to have poor customer service, bad billing problems and such. CIngular has had none.
However, some people may find that Cingular isn't as good. It may depend on the area you live in. There could be dead zones which are a pain and can hinder your service so you may want to check all your options.

I've had Sprint and T-Mobile. In the case of reception strengths, it all depends on where you use your phone. My old apartment is great for Sprint, but I was lucky if I can get one bar at my parents house. However, TMobile works great at my parents house and not so great at my apartment.
The best thing to do is find a person with TMobile and another with MetroPCS and have them check their signal strength where you'd use it the most. If that is not feasible, you can put in writing a "back-out-of-contract" clause to allow you to cancel your contract if you dont get sufficient signal strength. My friend did this when TMobile first came out.

I feel that cingular has the best reception. I hardly drop any calls. I have tried a few other companies and have always had problems. So i would definately reccommend Cingular.

You specified best reception. So Verizon! It is more pricy than the others, but for reception alone it is your best option. Check with your human resources company to see if you qualify for 10-15% off your cell phone bill. Most companies will offer some discount.

T-Mobile.
I only spent $30 on a T-Mobile phone. It gets better reception than Virgin mobile and Sprint. Both phones which I had paid over $100 for
