Most often "tener" means "to have", that is to hold in your possession. "Tengo un libro" means "I have book".

"Tener" can also be used in many expressions where it is mostly translated as "to be" (am, is, are, ...). For example "Tengo catroce anos" means "I am 14 years old", "tienes miedo" means "you are afraid", and "Ella tiene sed" means "she is thirsty".
