I think it stems from the time when a dowery was given to a family you were to marry into.

A woman would hope, to get married and her family would give her things to put in a chest to keep for the day when she got married.

My parents collected a set of dishes for me and some serving pieces. They started it when I was little. So now I have the china they bought and use it all on the holidays!

A hope chest (originally called a wedding chest) or glory box is a box containing items typically stored by unmarried young women in anticipation of future marriages or married lives.

The term "hope chest" may be used primarily by Midwestern American women. The term "glory box" is used by women in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Common contents of a "hope chest" or "glory box" include clothing (such as a special dress), table linens, towels, bed linens, quilts and occasionally dishware.

I don't know all the history but women put "the firsts" things in it like, your baby's first pacifier and things like that,it can also be little souvenirs like a napkin from your wedding.
