tomatoes, spinach, runner beans and the cut and come again lettuce types are all really easy to start off with.

Tomato variety Gardeners Delight has always worked really well for me both on the veg plot and under glass.

Spinach is so easy just to sow straight from the packet and it grows anywhere !

Runner beans can either be started off under glass in April or sown directly into the ground in April/May and will usually produce a bumper crop without too much effort.

The cut and come again lettuces can just be sown thinly in rows from March-September and will also produce an excellent crop several times over.

May I suggest the Grow Your Own magazine / Kitchen Garden Magazine for some excellent advice on fruit and veg cultivation for beginners. Also be sure to add plenty of well rotted manure / organic material to your plot to improve soil fertility and improve crop yields.

Best thing to do is go to the council or speak to someone you see working on a allotment as to who you should speak to. Once you have a site clear all the area and compost if poss burn any nasty roots in the ground that are white as these will cause problems even if a small bit is left in the ground dig in compost and growmore and leave till next year then your best bet is to buy the book called The Vegetable and Herb Expert by Dr.D.G. Hessayon for the first year grow potatoes Early and late this will help break up the soil but remember to rotate all is explained in the book. good luck

Your first move should be to contact the council and find out where the different sites are. Visit them and choose a plot. Clear an area at a time and go for potatoes first its hard work to begin with depending on when the plot was last used, its something all the family can join in on. Talk to other plot holders for different tips eveybody has something to say that will help.
Good luck and happy growing

cool, great idea.

You might be missing the point a little though.

Alotments are a community resource and you'd be much better making friends on the allotments, they will give you all the advice you need and welcome novices trying to have a go. Everyone apprecaites enthusiasm.

Its not hard work, its great.

Cannabis should make you very popular,
failing that carrots, courgettes, potatoes, runner beans and rocket are quite easy to start off with.
Good luck :D
