They look at the receipts at the end of the shifts and pay out what the tipper tipped.

At the restaurant I worked at, you'd pay us servers, and we'd put the tips in the computer if it were credit, and then at the end when we do a check-out, it adds them all up- we end up getting whatever tips were put in the computer. So at the end, if a lot of ppl pay cash and some credit, it will add up all the sales, and subtract the tips to tell us how much we owe or how much the restaurant owes us- which they really only owe us if there are more credit sales.
In the end, it all works out. Stinks that we had to tip out 25-30 a night!

Usually at the end of the night but...... charge tips are fully taxable as opposed to cash. So about 30% will be lost eventually. The credit card companies charge the restaurant a percentage and in smaller mom and pop's this is deducted at the end of the night. Plus this adds to the pay out to various staff at the end of the night. Always best, and appreciated when you get a cash tip with the credit slip. Then the server gets it all.

I always tip separately from the card - to be certain that the server gets it.

Now I'm going to ask a waitress or two how it's handled . Do they have to wait a month or so for the tip money? Are the tips on cards totted-up at the and of each shift? There are some unscrupulous restaurant owners out there.

It totally depends on the restaurant. At my restaurant (and most chain restaurants) when we cash out at the end of the night, we print a report that tells us our our sales, credit card tips, and all that. Our credit card tips are deducted from what we owe the restaurant (since we carry around our own "bank").

Good question. The credit card company charges the restaurant a percentage for using their card. Depends on the company, but Visa & Mastercard usually take 2-3% for their fee, and AmEx usually takes 5%.

Now, it depends on the restaurant. Some may give the waiter his full tip that you specified. Some may reduce his tip by his pro-rata percentage of what the credit card company took. And some may take the full charge out on the waiter and reduce his tip by the fee the restaurant was charged by the credit card company.

Example:

Bill is $75 and you tip the waiter $15.

Assuming you pay by credit card and the card company charges 5%. The restaurant will submit $90 to your card and receive $85.50 in payment.

1. The restaurant gives the waiter his $15 tip and keeps $70.50 for their $75 meal.

2. The restaurant gives the waiter only $12 of his tip and keeps $73.50 for their meal.

3. The restaurant gives the waiter only $10.50 of his tip and keeps the full $75 for their meal.

When you leave a tip on a credit card , if it is a reputable Establishment the tip will be forewarded to the server in full. The same goes for a tip left on a debit card payment. I work in an American restaurant in Canada. We receive our credit card and debit tips the next day and have no reason to think we don't receive them in full.

it varries from restaurant to restaraunt but the ones i worked at usualy when the waiter "cashes out" at the end of the night (basicly when they clock out and print reports and give the money from their bills) there is a spot on their report that tells them how much in CC tips they made and there is an option on the register to cash out cc tips in which they get the cash and the company gets the extra amount (tip) from the credit card

while i develop right into a waitress, it develop into as much as the server to function the top into the pc. it may only be an blunders on the waiter's section. On maximum cost slips it has the top line, the bill quantity and then the full. despite in case you skipped the top line, it develop into nevertheless up on your server to function the top. A credit card value is a 2 step procedure for them. in case you gave them an entire, then they could desire to have finished it when you consider which you probably did no longer.
