I'm an Austinite who's presently living in Dallas because I got a job here. I prefer Austin, but Dallas is also pretty good. The reasons I prefer Austin - beyond the obvious fact my family and friends are there - include (1) I think it's more livable, there are more neighborhoods where you can live without having to constantly deal with the freeway (2) The parks and public pools - Barton Springs, Deep Eddy, Town Lake walking trail, overall Hike and Bike, Lake Austin and Lake Travis nearby, creeks and rivers to go tubing nearby; (3) The University and its resources including cultural events sponsored by the University, and I use the UT libraries a lot; (4) Tons to do -- music scene, lots of art movies, foreign movies, etc., great restaurants, etc. One drawback could be that Austin is more humid and has a deserved reputation for being Allergy Alley. However I'm not sure Dallas does not also have a high allergy rate. I think Austin is a lot prettier with hills and trees and lots of green space.

Now, here are my impressions of Dallas: (1) This is also a very good city. (2) It gets as many good movies as Austin. (3) It has a tremendous number of good restaurants. (4) It has excellent art museums. It has much more in the way of art museums than Austin, especially if you count the fact that Fort Worth is a short drive away. (5) I found an excellent apartment with tons of amenities, close in, and it was quite affordable. (6) White Rock Lake, which is in town, has a beautiful hike and bike trail. BUT it's not centrally located - I have to drive a ways to get there. Outdoor amenities in Dallas seem less plentiful and less nearby. (7) Dallas seems to have a pretty good music scene but I don't know anyone here to go hear music with. (8) The freeways here have horrible traffic even worse than Austin. (9) Dallas has some public transportation, even a light rail system, but I have not figured out how to use it yet. There seem to be no stops convenient to me. (10) If you're made of money Dallas has great shopping, but I am not made of money. (11) However, Dallas has great thrift stores as is common with wealthy cities. I have picked up lots of used designer purses. (12) Dallas used to get hotter in the summer and colder in the winter than Austin but I guess that's only by a few degrees and the winters are generally mild in both places. (13) Dallas sprawls and if you don't live close in, you will constantly be in the car; (14) But there are lots of good housing options close in, it seems to me.

The weather is close enough between the two that I wouldn't base a decision on where to live on that.

Dallas is bigger, so there's more air pollution on average. Austin's got the live music scene if you're into that.

Austin's politics seems more left-leaning than the rest of Texas, including Dallas, which may be a plus or a minus, depending on your own political leaning.

having lived in all of those places, there is a lot of differences between the three. yes, three. dallas and fort worth are two distinct cities. i spent my college years in austin and loved it! it is a fun town with so much to offer. the live music, outdoors, shopping, and restaurants are wonderful! plus there are so many different people it is easy to make friends. i grew up in fort worth and loved it just as much as austin. it is more laid-back, the museums and zoo are much better, the downtown area is beautiful, housing is much cheaper, restaurants are just as good, and you have dallas and everything inbetween fw and dallas to choose from. weather wise, they both can be so hot in the summer and dreadfully cold and ice over in the winter (dfw more so). i think a drawback to austin might be its abundance of young singles, the high cost of good housing, and the fact that although it is the capital, its airport is not a major one. a drawback to fort worth is it does have quite a bit of traffic in the whole metroplex if you do not live and work on the same side of town, there are a bit less outdoor activities compared to austin, and the live music scene is not as prominient. dallas is a lot more cosmopolitian, generally more expensive, and not nearly as friendly as the other two. but dallas does have some great things, the museums and zoo are very good, they have some great shopping and restaurants, and they have a lot of major sporting and entertainment events. the three cities are all very different, but offer so much for the right kind of person. as a previous person suggested, it is always a great idea to come and experience things for yourself. :)

They are two different cities with two different sets of attributes. How are we supposed to answer this for you when we don't know anything about you, what you do for a living, what your hobbies are, your family situation, etc.? I suggest you visit both cities and go check out the things that interest you and then make a decision. Some on-line research will also help you to pinpoint specific things during your respective visits.
