Commonly called Jumping spiders, the Salticidae are also affectionately referred to as Charlies, Herbies or Salties. They are very common around the home and their anthropomorphic nature endears them to most people. The family name is derived from the Latin "salto" which means to dance with pantomimic gesturesThis is the largest spider family and includes more than 5000 species worldwide. There are 46 genera in South Africa. These spiders are harmless to man although there have been complaints where this comical, engaging animal has been accused of nasty bites.

There is a whole family of spiders (Salticidae) that are called jumping spiders. There are 400 worldwide (4 in the UK). Instead of building webs to catch their prey they ambush them by jumping on them from a distance.

Yes, I have seen a spider jumping. Of course it all depends on what type of spider it is.There are spiders and spiders and probably some of them may not jump.Any way that creepy, crowly disgusting insect is not that bad. You can keep one of them as your house pet.Good luck.

Im afraid they can, only too well but if you're in the uk like me, you need not worry.

Theres certain spiders in Oz that, if cornered, will chase you & jump on your back!! Glad i dont live there!!

Wood spiders (in Florida - they are huge) -- very very long legs and scary LOOKING -- will jump off of a top shelf onto you. It happened at our house --- I saw it. But he's was ok.
