One bar isn't enough protection?

It's too dangerous. The kicker shouldn't really get kicked, but sometimes he does, particularly when he tries to tackle someone returning the kick. As a result they banned the one bar face mask so they are better protected, but it impedes their view. Those kickers who have had the single bar face mask from before the rule was implemented are grandfathered, though, so they can keep them as long as they continue to play.

I don't think they are banned, I just think most players aren't stupid enough to take the risk. The only players who occasionally still wear them are kickers and that is probably because it is easier for them to see accurately where they want and trying to aim when they are in motion.

You answered your own question already.....Its just too damn risky to wear these type of face guards ....limited to no protection for anyone that wears them....You cant replace teeth and or jaw bones let alone doing face-lifts would be a everyday occurrence if it was still in the league!

To prevent face injuries, but the kickers that were using them at the time of the rule change were allowed to continue to use them.
