I have a girl friend and she is Muslim. And i am Hindu. We both are of marriagable age. Both of our families are very conservative and they wont allow us to get married. Still we do want to marry each other. But I wanted to know are we doing any kind of criminal offence. I meant in India is it a crime to marry a muslim girl being a Hindu boy. Or do we have to change our religions.

India is the largest democracy in the world with no religion given a special status as the state religion, unlike her neighbor's. Under the "special marriage act" a marriageable age man and woman from any religion can get married in the marriage court or in the office of the marriage registrar. If you are staying abroad, this marriage can be done in the Indian consulate or embassy in front of the special officer.

Muslims are only allowed to marry christians, jews or other muslims. It is against religion to do otherwise. So if you want to marry, one of you is going to have change religion.
