Your question is too general. Do you mean working in a professional trade? Do you mean merely getting a job? Or do you mean getting a work visa from outside? You need to make your question more specific.
If you are interested in getting a work visa, go to http://www.state.gov and search for your answer.

If you don't have Permanent Residency (Green Card), then you need a work visa.
In order to obtain a work visa H1, you need someone to offer you a job. Your chances of obtaining one increase if the job you are offered is related to your field (For example: if you are an engineer, you should get a job in engineering or science).
Once you have been given a job and you have a letter stating so, your employer fills up a sponsorship form. This form essentially says who your employer is, what job you will be doing, and how much you will be paid.
After you have all of this, you must go to the nearest US Embassy in your country and apply for a work visa.

Right off the bat, the first thing that comes to my mind is PAPERS! If you come as an illegal alien your chances of getting a good job are minimal. If you are not legal here you won't even be able to apply for a driver's license if you need one.
