most tests of this nature are testing your ability to take a test as well as your knowledge. SAT tests were originally designed to predict college freshman year GPA which is why schools use them as an entrance exam. it is a decently accurate test but not perfect by a long shot.
in my Psychological Testing class, we learned that to combat text anxiety, one of the best things to do is get a full night's sleep, eat a well-balanced meal in the morning. then when you get into the room where you are taking the test, take several deep/ relaxing breaths, remind yourself that you know the answers to the test, and if you don't know one, you can always come back to it later. mainly you are relaxing and giving yourself a pep-talk. the more relaxed you are/the less anxiety you have, the more likely you will be able to take the test more effectively rather than freaking out. this works for me every time.
my grandmother, who was a teacher, gave me some great advice when i was very young, she said that there is a basic rule on all multiple-choice tests:
of the 4 possible answers, there will generally be on answer that is the opposite of the correct answer, one that is a ridiculus answer, and 2 possible correct answers. if you absolutely do not know the correct answer, try to identify the 2 possibles. once you have done that, look at the verb tense of the question and see if it matches the verb tense (past, present, future) of one of the questions but not the other one. also, look to see if there are words in common between the question and one of the answers but not the other. She also said to pay attention to words like "always, never," etc that are all encompasing, answers with those words are usually wrong. but when the words "sometimes, often," etc are used, these are a more likely answer because it allows for some gray area. also, before you choose "all of the above" or "none of the above", make absolutely sure that every option is valid.
one thing i have noticed over the years is that on many tests, the answer to a question sometimes can be found in a question later on in the test. just mark the ones you need to go back and look at again and move on rather than spending your time stressing over one answer. get the stuff you know taken care of first. also, when you spend alot of time second-guessing an answer, often you end up changing a correctly guessed answer to an incorrect answer. if you don't know the answer, read the question very carefully, and stick with your gut instinct.
definately pay attention to what the administrator tells you!! some tests penalize for guessing rather than leaving an answer blank, whereas some tests penalize for leaving an answer blank but will give at least some credit for an attempt.
good luck to you!!!

The major thing is getting a lot of sleep before the test, and studying right before you go to bed. You absorb a lot more that way. Dark chocolate only calms you down and protects your immune system. If you want more go to the website below( its a radio station I listen to all the time and get a bunch of info from.) Take a look through the categories.

Pay close attention to the wording of the questions and unless you know the answer outright, first eliminate the patently wrong answers. If you are unsure, note which ones you have narrowed it down to and move onto the next question. If you have time come back to it. This of course assumes that you are not penalized for an answer that is not completed.

Take as many sample SAT tests as possible. There are books you can buy that have a lot of sample tests and tips. Also, READ READ READ anything. Newspapers, books, etc. You will be better prepared for the Verbal section.

I believe one of the best ways to learn anything is to use flashcards. Write a question on the front and an answer on the back or write a word on the front or a definition on the back. Have your niece just keep going through them. The best way is to split the pile up and work on them over several days. Good Luck!
